MAYDAY MAYDAY! Aalto Sustainability Day

'Mayday Mayday!' is the Inaugural Event of Aalto Sustainability Hub, which aims to advance sustainable development through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, teaching and impact. The event brought together science, technology, arts, business and relevant institutions for open discussion related to sustainability.

Materials Platform was taking part in the event. Together with Aalto University Materials scientists, we were exploring future opportunities of sustainable materials for Finland and global communities.

The event was open to all Aalto University´s internal and external stakeholders. We thank all the presenters and our visitors for inspiring time we had together!

Artificial Intelligence in Materials Science

April 5th, 2018
Nanotalo, lobby, Puumiehenkuja 2, Otaniemi campus

Materials platform organized a pizza lunch event "Artificial Intelligence in Materials Science". The event focuses on looking at AI from the perspective of materials researchers.
The combination of materials science & artificial intelligence is topical also from funding perspectives. There is an ongoing funding call 'Future Makers' by the Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation (deadline 15.04). The topics of the call include artificial intelligence, platform economy, smart manufacturing, data-based materials science and technology, VR/AR.

PHOTO SHOOT DAY for materials research samples by Energy and Materials Platform

MATERIALS SCIENCE MEETS PHOTOGRAPHY, the exhibition by Materials Platform

This photography exhibition invited Dipoli visitors to explore a fascinating world of materials science through the lens of photography. ‘Materials Science meets Photography’ exhibition is the result of a photography workshop series organized by Aalto Materials Platform in collaboration with photography trainer Tiina Puputti.

The main goal of the exhibition is to provide basic and practical knowledge of how to photograph good quality images for scientific use, whether in an online publication, a print media, a presentation or a poster. This helps scientists to explore ways to communicate their research visually and narratively.

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP SERIES: making scientific photos with the focus on technical, visual and storytelling quality

The aim to provide basic knowledge of how to shoot good quality scientific images and videos.The course will provide a step-by-step guide on how to shoot photographs and videos for scientific use, whether it is an online publication, a print media, a presentation or a poster.

SMART TEXTILE, networking event

The event gathered researchers and industry professionals from fields associated with a smart textile. The current terminology, developing industry standards, challenges for commercialization, R&D, happening in local, European and worldwide markets were presented and discussed.

DEMONSTRATIONS WORKSHOP

The workshop is for the energy and materials researchers who are willing to demonstrate their work to the wider audience and who want to take their ideas to the next level. The workshop designed to help and ideate both physical and virtual aspects of research demonstrations, using the traditional presentation techniques together with new ones, such as VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality).

EIT OPPORTUNITIES
for Materials research and teaching

The purpose of the event was to clarify the somewhat complex EIT funding opportunities from the perspectives of materials research. For this, we invited the professionals that can help you identify if your research topic has the potential for EIT and they are there to help to succeed in acquiring funding.

PHOTO SHOOT DAY by Materials and Energy Platforms: labs and research process

This was the pilot photo shoot in a laboratory environment. Any materials or energy researcher who was preparing for funding applications in Autumn 2017 were able to participate in the lab photo shoot by applying for the time slot. The service might be continued in the future, stay tuned!

MATERIALS PLATFORM LAUNCH

The event introduced the highlights from different Aalto schools and keynote presentations about materials research in Aalto University. The event continued with networking accompanied by wine and canapés. 

The event was part of Aalto Festival 2017 and welcomed all Aalto University members, industry and everyone who is interested in the exciting world of materials research.

The Materials Platform fosters multidisciplinary efforts, networking, and visibility. Aalto University’s expertise in these areas covers a wide range of fields, and the innovations based on materials research provide great opportunities for Finnish and international businesses.
